Hate crime gives way to Cypress Project

In the early morning hours of July 30, Heyward Drummond and John Ellis were victims of Loudoun County’s first reported hate crime of the year. Vandals damaged their trees and shrubs, doused their yard with gasoline and spray-painted anti-gay rhetoric all across their property on Laceys Tavern Court near Aldie.

Since then, the couple has received an outpouring of support from neighbors and community groups.

“There have been so many angels that came forward to help, including many, many people from all over the company I work for [IBM],” Drummond said. “We have been so blessed by the humanity and kindness, it far outweighs the outrageous acts of hatred of a sick person.”
