Leading Va. gay rights foe to face challenger

Roemmelt challenges author of Va.’s Marriage Affirmation Act

Del. Bob Marshall (R-Manassas), named by the gay and lesbian civil rights group Equality Virginia as one of the leading opponents of gay rights in the Virginia General Assembly, is being challenged this election season by Democrat Bruce Roemmelt, a career public servant with a plan to address the region’s traffic quagmire.

Marshall has represented Virginia’s 13th District, which includes Prince William County and part of Loudoun County, since 1992.

Marshall authored the Marriage Affirmation Act, which denies all legal recognition to same-sex relationships and has made conservative social issues a major focus during his time in office. In the last election, he ran unopposed.
